Knowing More About Organic Fertilizer Chart

Don’t use chemical fertilizers. They kill microbes in the soil and drive off earthworms and other useful soil critters. They are harmful to birds, pets, small children, and all living things. They get washed into our groundwater and mix with other chemicals to make some truly deadly “brews”. Natural fertilizers do the same job and encourage the life you need in order to have a balanced and beautiful garden.

Grow Your Own Fertilizers:  An excellent method for improving the soil for vegetable gardens and large areas that are to be planted…

“Green manure” is a cover crop that is turned into the soil and allowed to decompose.  Green manures have long been used by wise farmers to improve their soil.  Now home gardeners are discovering the advantages of even very small areas.

They reduce weeds and hold nutrients in the soil over winter that might be leached away by rains.  Their root systems bring nutrients up where they can be used by crops and when they are turned into the soil they enhance biological activity, increase the organic content, add humus and improve the tilth and structure of the soil.  And last but certainly not least, some provide spectacular bloom.

Nitrogen  –  Legumes  ( lupine, clovers, alfalfa, peas, beans, vetch)  Till these under before they bloom for the best supply of nitrogen.
Phosphorus  –  Alfalfa, mustard, buckwheat.
Potassium  –  Vetches
Beneficial Insect Food  –  Buckwheat, alfalfa, white clover, white mustard.
Winter Clover  –  fava beans, winter rye, scotch kale.
Soil Loosener for Heavy Soils  –  Mustard, buckwheat, alfalfa.  (These three are good for all sorts of things!)
Spectacular Bloom  –  Crimson clover, birdsfoot trefoil, lupine, mustard, and sunflower.
